INSPIRATIONAL SPEAKER PROFILE

Steve Judge.

Two-Time Paratriathlon World Champion | European Champion | Author | TEDx Speaker | Resilience & Achievement Catalyst

From a wheelchair and the possibility of never walking again to representing Great Britain, becoming a two-time world champion and helping people turn adversity into meaningful action.

Steve Judge is a British two-time Paratriathlon World Champion, European Champion, author, TEDx speaker, coach and award-winning international keynote speaker.

His story changed dramatically in 2002 when a serious road accident crushed both of his legs and left him facing the possibility that he might never walk again.

Rehabilitation became a long process of surgery, pain, reconstruction, uncertainty and relearning abilities that had previously required no conscious thought.

Rather than pretending those circumstances were easy, Steve learned to reduce an overwhelming future into the next useful action: one target, one decision and one piece of progress at a time.

That process eventually took him from standing to walking, running, swimming and cycling — and then into elite paratriathlon.

Steve became a British and European champion, won consecutive World Paratriathlon Championship titles in Beijing in 2011 and Auckland in 2012, and represented Great Britain at international level.

Today his work connects resilience, achievement, ownership, goal-setting, wellbeing, leadership and the people required to help us achieve our own GOLD.

BEFORE THE ACCIDENT

Goal-setting began long before medals and motivational speaking.

Steve Judge reflecting on his Yorkshire childhood, Scouts and early love of sport

Born in 1973

World Triathlon records Steve Judge's year of birth as 1973.

Public biographical material describes Steve growing up in Yorkshire as the youngest of three children.

Scouts

One of the earliest recurring themes in Steve's own story is Scouting.

As a child he enjoyed choosing Scout badges, deciding which achievement he wanted next and then working towards earning it.

Decades later he would recognise that this was an early version of the process he now teaches professionally:

decide what you want, understand what the target requires and keep taking action until progress becomes visible.

An active childhood

Steve also developed a strong interest in sport and particularly running.

Physical activity, adventure and personal challenges were part of his identity before disability became part of his life.

Engineering route

Published speaker biographies describe Steve leaving school with the qualifications required to begin an engineering apprenticeship.

His early working life included practical engineering environments and later professional responsibilities in health and safety and construction-related project work.

A normal life — until one journey changed it

Nothing in those early years suggested that Steve's future would involve disability sport, world titles or professional speaking.

The event that created that future was not planned.

2002 — EVERYTHING CHANGES

At twenty-eight, Steve lost control of his car and nearly lost the life he knew.

A wet road

In a detailed first-person interview, Steve explained that there was water on the road when his car skidded.

He has stressed that he was not speeding or drink-driving and that no other vehicle was involved.

No control

Steve remembers seeing a roadside pole approaching while being unable to control the vehicle.

He braced for impact.

The collision knocked him unconscious.

Both legs badly damaged

The crash caused catastrophic injuries to both legs.

Contemporary published accounts describe approximately four inches — around 100mm — of bone being removed from his badly damaged right leg.

His left leg also suffered major nerve and ligament damage.

Sheffield Northern General Hospital

Steve was taken to Northern General Hospital in Sheffield, where extensive medical treatment began.

His own official biography credits the NHS team there with helping save and reconstruct his legs.

“You may never walk again”

After life-saving operations, Steve faced conversations about the possibility that independent walking might never return.

The scale of the future became overwhelming.

His response was eventually to make the future smaller.

THE LONG REBUILD

Recovery was measured in millimetres before it could be measured in miles.

Steve Judge reflecting on rehabilitation, resilience and rebuilding his mobility after severe leg injuries

External fixation

Steve spent approximately eighteen months with an external metal frame around his right leg.

The reconstruction process involved slowly encouraging new bone growth.

One millimetre

In later interviews Steve has described adjusting the frame in tiny increments — around one millimetre per day.

That image has become a powerful metaphor for his wider philosophy.

When the end goal feels impossible, measurable progress does not have to look dramatic.

Ten seconds could be exhausting

Steve has also described early attempts at walking where seconds of effort could leave him completely exhausted.

Progress had to be judged against yesterday rather than against the able-bodied runner he remembered being before the crash.

“Why me?” became “Try me”

A key mental change came when Steve stopped defining the situation only through what had happened to him.

His language moved from “Why me?” towards “Try me.”

Ownership without pretending to control everything

Steve could not reverse the accident.

He could not guarantee the medical outcome.

He could decide what action to take next.

This distinction between what has happened and what you can influence next became central to his later keynote work.

Independence returns gradually

Steve's rehabilitation progressed from basic independence to standing and walking.

Eventually the question changed.

Instead of asking whether he could walk, Steve began asking what else the reconstructed body might be capable of.

REBUILDING MORE THAN MOBILITY

Rehabilitation happened alongside work, family and ordinary responsibility.

Back into professional life

Steve did not spend the years after the accident living only as a rehabilitation patient.

By the mid-2000s he was working professionally in health and safety and construction-related project environments.

Nearly a decade in health and safety

Speaker biographies describe Steve working in health and safety management for almost ten years.

This gave him a professional life completely separate from the athlete identity he would later develop.

Family responsibilities

Steve has spoken about balancing full-time work, family life and eventually elite training.

His later sporting achievements therefore did not happen in an isolated full-time athlete environment.

The new normal

Permanent restrictions remained in both legs.

The objective became less about recreating the exact body Steve had before 2002 and more about discovering what the body he had now could do.

That change opened the route towards para sport.

FROM REHABILITATION TO COMPETITION

Rother Valley became both rehabilitation ground and championship ground.

Running again

As Steve's recovery progressed he began running more.

His brain remembered what running should feel like, while the limitations in his reconstructed legs made the reality physically demanding.

Rother Valley Country Park

Steve had used Rother Valley Country Park during his walking rehabilitation.

It later became significant for a completely different reason.

Discovering paratriathlon

Steve learned that his permanent impairments made him eligible for paratriathlon.

The sprint-distance format combined:

  • 750m swimming,
  • 20km cycling,
  • 5km running.

2009 — first major target

A contemporary Yorkshire account says Steve set himself the challenge of completing a paratriathlon in 2009.

He subsequently won his category at the British Paratriathlon Championships.

The emotional finish

Steve has described leading through the swim and bike, struggling during the run and seeing a rival close the gap.

He reached the line first.

The emotion was not only about winning.

It represented proof that the accident had changed his life without ending his ability to achieve.

GREAT BRITAIN & WORLD TITLES

The rehabilitation target became an international sporting career.

2010 — British Champion

British Triathlon selection material identifies Steve as the 2010 Tata Steel British Paratriathlon Champion.

World Class Programme

Steve was selected onto British Triathlon's early World Class Paratriathlon Programme as the sport prepared for its eventual Paralympic debut.

2010 European silver

British Triathlon material from 2011 identifies Steve as a 2010 European silver medallist.

Pontevedra — 25 June 2011

At the European Championships in Spain, Steve won men's TRI-3 gold.

His winning time was 1:20:38.

Beijing — September 2011

Steve then competed at the ITU Paratriathlon World Championships in Beijing.

Great Britain finished first and second in men's TRI-3, with Steve taking World Championship gold ahead of teammate James Smith.

Auckland — 22 October 2012

One world title could have been treated as the destination.

Steve returned the following year and defended it.

At the World Championships in Auckland, New Zealand, Steve won men's TRI-3 again in 1:02:55.

Consecutive world champion

The athlete who had once been uncertain whether independent walking would return was now a two-time world champion representing Great Britain.

THE CHAMPION KEEPS COMPETING

World titles did not remove pain, pressure or the need to keep adapting.

Alanya 2013

Steve returned to European Championship competition in Turkey.

World Triathlon records him finishing second in TRI-3 in 1:10:18.

British Champion again

On 13 July 2013 Steve won the Great Britain Para Triathlon National Championships in his category.

London World Championships

At the 2013 ITU World Triathlon Grand Final in London, Steve finished second to Italy's Michele Ferrarin.

His time was 1:16:54, only 35 seconds behind the winner.

Official World Triathlon record

Steve's World Triathlon profile records:

12 Starts 11 Podiums 7 Wins

2014

World Triathlon lists Steve's final recorded international era result at the 2014 Great Britain Para Triathlon National Championships, by then under the newer PT4 classification.

Why stop?

In later interviews Steve has explained that approximately five years of training six days a week — while working, raising a family and managing permanent leg injuries — had become exhausting.

Retirement was not failure.

It was another decision about what he wanted the next part of life to become.

Steve developed his speaking and coaching work through his own business, i.Nspire.

The emphasis moved from simply telling audiences that he had overcome adversity to giving them tools they could apply to their own goals.

TEDx — 2016

Steve delivered “Don't Lean on your Excuses, Turn Them into Challenges” at TEDxSheffieldHallamUniversity.

The talk focuses on the connection between rehabilitation, personal responsibility and setting meaningful challenges.

Professional Speaking Association

Steve became active within the Professional Speaking Association and later served as Yorkshire President.

His own current website states that he has been named Professional Speaking Association Regional Speaker of the Year three times.

Steve's official site also identifies him as a Global Business Awards Motivational Speaker of the Year.

Major audiences

Published client lists include organisations such as:

  • Rolls-Royce,
  • Toyota,
  • HSBC,
  • the NHS,
  • the Financial Conduct Authority,
  • and the University of Edinburgh.

His audience therefore extends well beyond sport into leadership, business, education, healthcare, sales and organisational change.

Don't Lean on Your Excuses

Steve's autobiography Don't Lean On Your Excuses: A World Champion's Courageous Story That Inspires Living With No Regrets was published in July 2019.

The book traces the journey from accident and hospital through reconstruction, independence, sport and world championship success.

Chapter themes include:

  • ownership,
  • progress,
  • opportunity,
  • time,
  • changing the plan rather than the goal,
  • and learning when an excuse has become a barrier.

GOLD

Steve's second major book develops his achievement methodology into a practical structure for personal and professional goals.

GOLD is built around:

G Goal O Opportunity L Love D Dream

The central idea is not simply to want more.

It is to define what success genuinely means, notice the opportunities available, understand why the goal matters and connect daily action to the bigger life somebody wants to create.

Explore GOLD ↗

GOOD TO GOLD

Four letters that make ambition easier to act on.

G

Goal

Get specific about what you actually want rather than working towards a vague idea of improvement.

O

Opportunity

Notice opportunities, people and routes that become visible once the destination is clearer.

L

Love

Understand the emotional reason behind the goal and why continuing to pursue it is worth the effort.

D

Dream

Connect today's difficult action to the larger future that the action is helping create.

THE GOLDEN WAVE OF RESILIENCE

Resilience is not a permanent state of toughness.

Resilience changes

Steve describes resilience as something that moves rather than something somebody simply “has” or “doesn't have”.

Difficult periods involve changing emotional and physical capacity.

The objective is not to deny that movement.

It is to understand what helps somebody continue through it.

Mental and physical health

Steve increasingly connects achievement with wellbeing.

Sleep, physical health, mental health, support networks and recovery determine whether somebody can repeatedly arrive at their own “start line”.

Golden Gang

Steve also talks about the people around a goal.

World championship success did not happen because one person displayed enough individual determination.

Medical teams, coaches, training partners, family, colleagues and supporters all mattered.

High performance is social

This gives the story strong relevance to organisations.

Individual accountability matters.

So does building an environment where people are supported, challenged and encouraged by the right team.

COMPLETING THE CIRCLE

The childhood Scout eventually became the adult helping the next generation.

Cub Scout Leader

Steve continues to volunteer with the Scout Association.

His official charity page identifies him as a local Scout leader with the 6th Eckington Scout Group.

President of Derbyshire Scouts

Steve also serves as President of Derbyshire Scouts.

The connection is particularly meaningful because Scouting was one of the places where his childhood habit of setting goals first developed.

Skills for life

Steve describes his volunteering in terms of helping young people experience fun, challenge, adventure, skills and opportunity.

Achievement is not only personal

His own medals demonstrate what a person can achieve.

The community work demonstrates a different definition of achievement: creating opportunities that other people can use.

  • change,
  • leadership,
  • burnout,
  • wellbeing,
  • organisational pressure,
  • goal-setting,
  • and sustainable performance.
FROM WHEELCHAIR TO WORLD CHAMPION

Eight practical principles behind the story.

01

Own the Next Action

You may not control the situation, but you can identify what remains within your influence.

02

Make Progress Small Enough

A huge future becomes less overwhelming when progress can be reduced to today's measurable action.

03

Change the Plan

A route can fail without the deeper objective becoming irrelevant.

04

Turn Excuses Into Challenges

Identify whether the barrier genuinely prevents progress or simply requires another strategy.

05

Know Your Why

Motivation becomes more durable when the difficult action is connected to something personally meaningful.

06

Build Your Golden Gang

Progress accelerates when people around you provide the right combination of expertise, support and challenge.

07

Protect the Start Line

Mental and physical wellbeing are part of performance, not rewards somebody earns after performing.

08

Live With Fewer Regrets

Steve's wider philosophy asks people to decide what success means to them and act before opportunity becomes hindsight.

BOOK STEVE JUDGE

Bring world-champion resilience and practical achievement thinking to your audience.

Steve's story is extraordinary, but the value to an audience is not simply hearing that an injured man eventually won medals.

The practical value lies in how that journey happened:
